The Vision Council Optical Retail Division Background
The establishment of the Vision Council Optical Retail Division represents the latest evolution of the organization. The Vision Council has witnessed a significant transformation since its inception in 2000, and today has over 760 member companies. Since 2004, six different optical industry trade associations have merged into the organization resulting in a significant increase in membership, a wider diversity of members, and an organization that better reflects the whole of the optical industry.
In has been noted that in today’s optical retail environment, there does not appear to be an organization that focuses on the unique business needs of optical retail. As the optical industry has evolved, we have witnessed a blurring of the lines between retail and wholesale. Today, optical retailers are increasingly sourcing their own lenses, frames and sunglasses while The Vision Council’s traditional member companies have incorporated a retail component. The Vision Council leadership has discussed the role of optical retail within the association for more than 10 years and during the most recent Board of Directors meeting in September of 2017, voted overwhelmingly to establish The Vision Council Optical Retail Division (ORD).
