The American Anthropological Association, a membership-based scholarly and professional society in the DC-metro area, seeks an innovative and results-oriented Director of Development.
This is a new position that will lead the Association in building and implementing a comprehensive fundraising strategy, encompassing the annual fund, major gifts from individual and institutional donors, planned giving, and communications in support of these programs.
This is an excellent opportunity for a person who has a demonstrated track record of significantly growing a development program. The successful candidate will have a proven ability to work effectively with multiple donor constituencies, excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills, the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously, and work effectively in a team environment.
Specific responsibilities include:
Support the fundraising role of the Executive Director by providing guidance on donor strategy and outreach and ensuring that they are prepared for fundraising meetings. Take part in solicitation meetings along with the Executive Director.
Manage overall strategy and supports the work of campaign volunteers, staffing their meetings and supporting their outreach.
Work with the Executive Director, consultant, and communications/marketing team in refining AAA’s philanthropic case for support.
Establish portfolios and the implementation of relationship management best practices. Personally manage a portfolio of major gifts prospects.
Build an AAA-wide culture of philanthropy by engaging key internal stakeholders and staff members in fundraising activities.
Provide regular reports on development activity to the Executive Board (and any related/future committees) and support their engagement in fundraising.
Conduct monthly prospect review meetings with the Executive Director to ensure a steady cadence of fundraising activity.
Create a formal planned giving program targeting long-term members, volunteers, and professors emeritus.
Oversee AAA’s cultivation events and work with other AAA staff to ensure that philanthropy is highlighted at AAA conferences.
Manage the Development budget to ensure the best return on investment.
Support the increased visibility of AAA as a destination for charitable giving among non-members and the public at large.

Education: Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred. CFRE certification a plus. Familiarity with the field of anthropology through formal coursework and/or prior employment experience a plus.
Experience: 7-10 years of fundraising experience required, with increasing responsibility over this period, working closely with executive leadership and volunteers, and demonstrated experience building organizational capacity for fundraising in a professional association, membership organization, or higher education setting.
Skills and Abilities: Demonstrated strengths in organization, planning, spoken and written communication, teamwork, customer-service orientation; detail-oriented, flexible, demonstrated ability to work with a broad range of scholars, students, and practicing professionals. Demonstrated proficiency with budgets, timelines, deadlines, quality assurance, and other aspects of project management. Demonstrated effectiveness in staff supervision.
Must be able to independently conduct donor/prospect visits, including air travel and maintaining a valid driver’s license.
Proficiency with MS Office and development software required. Familiarity with NetForum Enterprise Association Management System a plus.
Occasional evening and weekend work and some travel required.
Must be willing to relocate to the Washington, DC metropolitan area if not already an area resident.
