Under general supervision, the Managing Scientific Editor is responsible for applying scientific expertise to support the program-wide manuscript transfer process. Works with the Director and Assistant Director to successfully launch a new scientific journal which is intended to publish direct submissions of sound science, as well as high-quality manuscripts transferred within the ASM program. Acts as the Managing Editor for this new journal. This position supports the goals of the department and the mission of ASM.
Apply domain expertise in the microbial sciences to aid ASM Editors in the development and ongoing application of journal scope and criteria for publication.
Ensure an efficient, program-wide editorial transfer process that maximizes manuscript capture of high-quality content.
Provide guidance program-wide to ASM Editors on transfer process and consult on transfer manuscripts as needed.
Monitor and report on transfer process across ASM Journals program.
Serve as ASM Journals representative at meetings and conferences to engage with potential authors, encourage submission of high-quality research content, and promote ASM Journals policies to the community.
Provide support program-wide to ASM Editors-in-Chief for development of sustainable, high-impact commissioned content, as needed.
Participate in cross functional scientific subject matter expert teams in ASM as needed.

Maintain knowledge of trends in microbial sciences literature to support content acquisition goals for journals.
Expertise in any field of the microbial sciences.
Familiarity with web-based technologies and with current practices in scientific publishing.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite

Physical Demands This is largely a sedentary role and may sit or use PC for long periods of time. Bending, reaching or stooping may be necessary for use of filing cabinets or other office cabinets or office machines. This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computer, phones, copiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
Travel Requirements Less than 10% of the time.
