AIGA, the professional association for design is the largest and most influential design association in the United States. 18,000 members strong with 75 local and regional chapters, and 200 student groups on college campuses nationwide—AIGA advances design as a professional craft, strategic advantage, and vital cultural force.
AIGA’s national office is located in New York City, however, 100% telecommuting (remote) from a U.S. location is possible with the requirement to be in the NYC office once per month for team workshops and meetings.
We are currently seeking a dynamic Director of Membership with five or more years of membership management experience to join our team. The ideal candidate will be community focused and service oriented with the drive to meet and exceed our annual revenue goals.
You will drive, develop and execute the overall membership department strategy, while continually analyzing membership performance. Collaborating with marketing, sponsorship, programs, and other internal teams and working closely with the AIGA Executive Director and Board of Directors, the Director of Membership will develop an annual budget and business plan for member acquisition, engagement, and retention for optimal revenue generation.
You make decisions and build strategies with a data-driven and analytical mindset. You are proficient and experienced on Apple platform (Microsoft & Google office products), as well as association management systems (Salesforce, Fonteva).You have extensive experience with data management, including highly skilled in spreadsheet use and proficient with data sets and construction of queries in databases.
As primary leadership for all aspects of new member growth, the Director of Membership reports directly to the Executive Director, and will lead and mentor two technically savvy membership team members with the goal of elevating member value, enhancing awareness of the AIGA brand, and advancing our mission.

WHAT YOU’LL DO
Create annual budget and business plan. Using a data-driven approach and an analytical skill set, develop and implement new strategies to increase the Membership program’s profitability and efficiency.
Collaborate with colleagues in administration and integration of AIGA’s association management system (AMS) Fonteva to optimize user experience and ensure accuracy of data and reporting.
Continually review and analyze Membership performance and activities to inform and determine AIGA’s member communication strategy and elevate the value and benefits of membership.
With the Senior Director of Communications, develop membership marketing materials, digital communications for web and email campaigns to support member acquisition, renewals, and upgrades.
Proactively develop and engage in projects aimed at increasing membership and improving overall member satisfaction and retention.
Implement new procedures aimed at improving department efficiency and profitability.
Lead and mentor a technically savvy and data-driven team responsible for multi-channel membership engagement, fulfillment, and service.
Evaluate and recommend new member pricing strategies while maintaining quarterly revenue projections.
With the Director of Corporate Relations, develop partnerships and opportunities that support and deliver value to AIGA’s members.
WHAT WE REQUIRE:
Bachelor’s degree with excellent written and verbal communication skills
Exceptional customer service skills, with a membership-focused mindset
High degree of organizational skills to manage processes, systems, and timeline for all membership communications.
Knowledge of best practices and current trends in membership retention and growth
Demonstrated success managing a membership department
Minimum of 5+ years of management-level experience, preferably in a nonprofit organization
Vision, energy, creativity and entrepreneurial spirit
Ability to work well in a virtual team environment is essential
Computer proficiency (Microsoft, Apple, Google office products), association management systems (Salesforce, Fonteva).
Ability to travel to national AIGA offices, events and/or conferences
