AFP seeks an engaging, creative, and self-motivated individual to join our Communications team and help manage the strategy, planning, scheduling and implementation of AFP’s external communications, public relations initiatives and public policy programs for the association’s 26,000+ members.
Working closely with the Vice President of Marketing and Communications and other staff, this position ensures that AFP’s external-facing content—which includes materials such as press releases, as well as programs such as awards, Ethics Awareness Month and National Philanthropy Day—is timely, relevant, valuable and on-brand.
The position calls for strong project management experience and an ability to excel tactically while advancing numerous concurrent programs. Qualified candidates should possess good oral and written communication skills and be able to represent AFP professionally in high-profile situations.
The position spends time working cross-departmentally with other staff on a variety of issues and is often in close communications with AFP volunteers, contractors, vendors and service providers.
Major Duties & Responsibilities:
Working with Vice President, Marketing and Communications, as well as Manager, Content and other staff board members/volunteers and committees, helps establish and implement a strong strategic communication plan positioning the association as the leading resource on philanthropy and ethical, effective fundraising to the profession, members of the media, the government, and the general public.
Maintain media contact lists and write/develop press releases and other media materials as needed.
Manage AFP awards program and help manage the Marketing, Awards and Communications Committee to ensure committee work is valuable.
Manage AFP’s National Philanthropy Day program
Working with other staff, help manage AFP’s Ethics Awareness Month program
Manages the communications of other Association strategic initiatives and partners
Works cross-departmentally to serve the communications needs of the organization and provide general support to the communications team as needed.
Other duties and special projects as assigned.
May require occasional travel and weekend work.
3 – 5 years of communication and public policy
AFP Staff currently work at AFPHQ two times/week in Arlington, Virginia
As with all AFP staff, fully vaccinated against covid-19
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong project management skills and experience
Ability to remain creative, diplomatic, calm under pressure
Knowledge of public policy process
Knowledge of media relations and how to work with the media is a plus
Attention to detail
Ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional department, and to foster communication and collaboration internally and externally
Strong organizational skills
