The SCA is a global leader in the provision of comprehensive ACCME accredited, professional education that in turn promotes safe, high quality, cost-effective medical care for patients undergoing cardiovascular and thoracic surgical procedures.
The Director of Education is directly responsible for the management of the Society’s Professional Education portfolio. This includes, but is not limited to, facilitating adherence to current principles of adult learning methodology and development of innovative educational offerings both at our in-person conferences and via our year-round online learning management platform (SCA University).
The Director of Education will report to the SCA Executive Director and will have two direct reports that manage both speakers and operational logistics for the in-person activities. Additionally, the Director of Education will serve as the main staff contact for the online education sub-committee.
The Director of Education will be accountable for the SCA’s compliance as an ACCME accredited provider. SCA is responsible for reporting all its educational activities to the ACCME and completing annual reports and re-accreditation audit materials when required to ensure compliance with all ACCME regulations. Experience with the overarching objectives and compliance criteria for ACCME accreditation is required. As well as a strong track record in professional medical education administration, the successful candidate will have previous experience of taking an accredited organization through an ACCME approval cycle.
The Director of Education will assess the current offerings by SCA and other leading organizations in the sub-specialty to identify and report on gaps and any overlap in educational content
The Director of Education works with volunteer leaders of the society, other SCA assigned staff and appropriate Veritas employees to design and implement educational programs developed for members of the society. Assists in the development of curriculum or content for all courses, conferences, or other educational materials
Develops comprehensive project timelines for all activities and manages project plans to meet deadlines and ensure successful programs
Maintains management oversight of Program and Education Managers to support development and implementation of educational offerings
Contributes to both team and volunteer committee planning processes for educational activities by gathering, analyzing, and interpreting data to help identify educational needs of members of the profession
Develops, compiles, and analyzes evaluation reports for educational activities to determine effectiveness, outcomes measurements, and future needs
Works closely with CME Manager and stays up to date regarding current CME accreditation standards, policies, and procedures and how they apply to planning CME activities
Ensures that required components of education programs meet the accreditation standards and correspond to the continuing education mission of the organization
Oversees the development and submission of annual CME reports to accreditation providers
Provides leadership and support to program, CME, and other related committees and task forces regarding educational content development, faculty recruitment and other course logistics
Ensures all action items generated from education related program committees and task forces are fulfilled
Builds relationships with leaders within the society to develop a network of dependable content experts
Works in cooperation with Industry Relations vendor to ensure that workshops, sponsorships and exhibits are successful
Maintains up-to-date project reports including project status, project planning timelines and final activity reports
Collaborates with the industry relations team to ensure compliance with accrediting bodies
Oversees the development of program schedules, outlines, handout materials, presentation materials, online surveys, and evaluation materials for assigned programs
Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director
Experience and Skills
Master’s degree, preferably in an educational discipline.
Minimum 5+ years progressive professional responsibility for management and administration of education programs, including curriculum development and demonstrated knowledge of continuing education essentials and standards
Strong experience and knowledge of ACCME and MOC policies, processes and requirements
Knowledge of contemporary e-learning technologies
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
Ability to effectively collaborate internally and externally
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and ensure timely and accurate results
