The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE), a non-profit membership association more than 145,000 current and retired federal employees, is dedicated to protecting and enhancing the earned pay, retirement and health care benefits of federal employees, retirees and their survivors and providing the information and guidance needed to understand and maximize complex federal benefits. The Director, Member Engagement is inherently involved with members, volunteers, and staff to execute the association’s strategic plan. This position is responsible for the overall NARFE membership strategy to generate awareness, participation and to derive revenue from NARFE’s membership programs and will be able to execute plans to foster and increase member engagement.
The incumbent will be expected to understand and explain to prospective members the purpose and value of being an NARFE member, and the positive outcomes of that membership. In this role, you will develop and manage strategies related to membership recruitment and engagement as well as ensure member records are accurate.
Responsibilities:
Spearhead the efforts necessary to grow NARFE’s membership.
Manage membership recruitment efforts including the dissemination of member benefit information and new member recruiting and onboarding.
Ensure the member information is accurate and member concerns/questions are addressed timely.
Lead an assessment and enhancement process of current NARFE member recruitment and retention practices.
Work with internal teams (Communications/Marketing/Business Development) to develop all membership communication materials and campaigns.
Responsible for the achievement of the membership departments, goals, budget and financial objectives.
Act as liaison to NARFE’s Membership Development Committee, and other standing committees as assigned.
Execute a strong data-driven member engagement, retention, and recruitment strategy and implementation plan. Provides monthly data and insights into the membership program, including but not limited to:
Assist Maintaining accurate membership records (using AMS membership database)
Conducting membership trend analysis by region
Recruitment and retention reports
Current, new, and prospective member information
Member experience throughout the join and renewal process
Maintain prospect database and implement campaigns to encourage membership.
Enhance member benefits and services. Works with staff and members to develop and manage processes for feedback on membership, programs, and services.
Initiate and manage strategic partnerships with similar associations and groups to help with recruitment and retention of membership, including attendance at these association meetings to represent NARFE.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment.
Supervise, mentor, evaluate, and coach the membership support team.
Supervisor responsibilities include:
Setting goals for performance and setting deadlines in ways that comply with company’s plans and vision.
Organizing workflow and ensuring that employees understand their duties or delegated tasks.
Monitoring employee productivity and providing constructive feedback and coaching.
Qualifications
Minimum 5 years of experience working for a membership based non-profit.
Outstanding communication (oral and written) influencing and relationship building skills.
Demonstrated ability to develop and execute new membership programs and initiatives.
Excellent writing and presentation skills, with an ability to create compelling, persuasive narratives that are strategically membership focused.
Ability to identify trends and gather/analyze insights from networks that translate into membership growth opportunities.
Extensive knowledge of the techniques necessary for expanding and retaining a membership base.
Strong analytical skills, as evidenced by experience with drawing insights from data and making decisions accordingly.
Prior experience working in an association or voluntary participation structure strongly preferred.
Experience with membership database management (AMS a plus) and productivity tools.
Strong interpersonal skills and commitment to a high level of customer service.
Excellent oral and written communication skills in order to interact effectively with members and customers outside the organization.
Willingness to travel and represent NARFE at professional conferences and leadership meetings.
Ability to work in headquarters office in Alexandria, VA three times/week (Remote two days/week).

The organization is currently operating on a hybrid schedule (In office 3 days/Remote 2 days/week).
