We have an exciting opportunity for a Director of Membership to join our Engagement team at our Central Office in Clarendon (Arlington), Virginia (DC-metro area).
As a key member of the Engagement team, the Director of Membership is responsible for planning, development and implementation of CEC’s strategies, communications, materials, and services related to individual and group membership recruitment, onboarding, and renewal. This role will partner closely with a wide range of internal and external constituents to drive awareness of CEC and its benefits and continue to build a strong membership value proposition, ensuring the highest level of service to our members.
Refine CEC’s Membership Value Proposition: Develop and lead a multi-prong approach to deliver a proactive recruitment strategy. Leverage member and non-member data collected through systems, surveys and third-party partners to better identify key member needs. Work cross-departmentally to strategize on value proposition for new individual and group members and ensure prospective new members are informed of benefits and are connected to resources to help them see CEC’s value.
Member Recruitment, Onboarding & Retention: Develop and evolve a member engagement strategy that is personalized, unique and will deepen the connection between CEC and its members, from their first encounter to renewing their membership. Share CEC’s values and offerings into the member experience and close the gap between the services members value and the experience CEC delivers. Gather analytics from member feedback surveys, member renewals, social media, and online community platforms to learn more about members and their needs.
Strategic MemberCommunications: Build a strategy and deliver a roadmap to increase awareness of CEC’s comprehensive member value proposition. Lead efforts to yield relevant, compelling and differentiated communications for a diverse base of members, including students, early career teachers and experienced professionals. Maintain awareness of issues relevant to the special education profession and identify the need for new member services and programs that align with the professional needs of current and potential CEC members.
Responsibilities:
Manage all aspects of the membership process including individual and group membership onboarding and activation workflow, timely invoicing, dues generation and renewal procedures.
Work with staff to convey the true value of membership to CEC members and increase usage of products and services in all media (e.g.; writing, webinar and video development, social media channels.)
Collaborate with internal stakeholders to develop marketing and communication strategies, plans and campaigns to promote CEC’s value proposition to existing and prospective members. Provide analysis of recruitment and retention campaigns.
Partner with Membership and Database Manager to ensure data integrity of membership database and continually identify methods to increase operational efficacy.
Lead the logistical implementation of the CEC’s online Community, support the engagement of robust online discussions and serve as the primary point of contact for troubleshooting.
Collaborate with Member Services and Finance Teams to ensure proper invoicing and crediting.
Work collaboratively with Components Team to support membership partnerships with CEC divisions and units.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Minimum of 5 years association management experience in membership with demonstrated success, preferably in the education sector.
Bachelor’s degree in education, marketing, communications, business administration, or other areas expected. Graduate degree in a related field desirable.
Demonstrated experience in acquiring and growing individual and group memberships.
An understanding of sales, marketing, and data analysis
Demonstrated problem solving and organizational skills with attention to detail.
Exceptional written, oral, public speaking, and interpersonal communication skills to engage members and stakeholders.
Commitment to working with shared leadership and cross-functional teams.
Experience working with vendors, developing and managing budgets, and managing revenue centers of the organization.

Travel and occasional weekend work required—to annual convention, affiliate conferences, related education conventions as necessary.
Proficiency with databases (Aarwin), Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; email communications (Prop Fuel and Informz), online community software (Higher Logic), and content management system.
CAE preferred.
