In this role, the Vice President of Advocacy is responsible for setting and executing the strategy and direction of SNAC’s Advocacy Department, which includes federal and state legislative activity, regulatory affairs, legal affairs, and political activity through SnackPAC. As the head of the Advocacy Department, this role requires leadership, creativity and consensus building as you are tasked with looking around corners for potential opportunities and threats arising from regulatory, legislative, political and/or legal activity, while also ensuring the details associated with compliance and implementation of regulation and legislation preserve our industry’s ability to prosper. The success of this role hinges on building consensus around SNAC’s priorities.
Overview
Reports directly to the SNAC International President & CEO.
Manages a team of legislative, regulatory, political, and legal consultants to carry out SNAC International’s legislative and regulatory strategy including day-to-day operations and annual budget.
May register as a lobbyist.
Educates Members of Congress, Congressional staff, and regulatory agencies on issues of importance to SNAC International members.
Represents SNAC and the association in front of Congress, regulatory agencies, the Administration, and industry allies at meetings and events.
Works directly with state and national food trade associations and member companies on issues of importance and identifies opportunities for SNAC International leadership. This includes running and chairing the Labeling Working Group for the Food and Beverage Issue Alliance (FBIA), running and chairing the Sodium Coalition, and co-chairing the SNAP Choice Alliance.
Prepares letters to the Hill, testimony, press releases, public comments to regulatory agencies, issue briefs, op-eds, action alerts, and a weekly newsletter.
Plans and executes SNAC International’s annual fly-in on Capitol Hill in June and Legal Forum in November. Also responsible for quarterly Government Affairs Committee meetings and bi-weekly member Advocacy Update calls.
Manages the SnackPAC Advisory Board and directs the SnackPAC strategy, fundraising, and development including creation of a PAC newsletter, PAC brochure, annual report, and official bylaws.
Directs all relevant SNAC committees.
Manages legislative and regulatory programming at annual SNAC events.
Oversees organizational and association governance, including attending all Board and Executive Committee meetings.

Desired Qualifications:
7+ years of experience navigating the regulatory and legislative landscape
Experience with legislative, regulatory, or political strategy development
Prior management experience
Prior experience working with or for a membership organization, coalition, or public affairs firm is highly valued
Juris Doctor from an accredited law school, preferred
Proven ability to develop and execute advocacy strategies (e.g., grassroots mobilization, lobbying campaigns, coalition building)
Excellent writing, communication, and public speaking skills
Ability to translate complex legal/policy issues into plain language for members and stakeholders
Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, particularly the ability to work with board members, legislators, agency officials, and other stakeholders
Sound judgment and ethical integrity
Experience handling contracts, governance, and employment law
Comfort with hands-on work in a small office environment
